About this event

Schuylkill River Park

 Walking Tour

Wednesday, May 29, 2019

Please join the Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia for a tour of the Schuylkill River Park and Trail along the Schuylkill River through Center City.  We will be guided by Club Past President Joseph Syrnick, President and CEO of the Schuylkill River Development Corporation/Schuylkill Banks.

Schuylkill River Park rose from previously-underutilized and undeveloped wastelands along the east bank of the Schuylkill River and has become one of our area’s popular attractions and recreational areas over the past twenty years.  The Trail ties into the Fairmount Park system at its northern end at the Waterworks, near the Art Museum, and continues south to approximately Christian Street, with a direct ramp connection to the South Street Bridge and a unique award-winning “boardwalk” over the River in the vicinity of Spruce Street.

Our walking tour will cover the original portions of the Park and trail and continue to the most-recent addition south of South Street.  It will explore the engineering challenges faced in the development, design and construction of the Park and its access points to the City street system.

Two options are available:

A tour of the entire Park will start at the gateway pergola at M. L. King (West River) Drive.  This             group will meet at that point starting at 4:00 PM and proceed south.

For those who are unable to attend the entire tour, a second group will join the tour at the Walnut Street Boat Dock entrance at 5:00 PM and proceed south from there.

The tour will continue south to the end of the trail at Christian Street and return north, with an expected arrival at Walnut Street at 6:00 PM.  An optional informal happy hour will be available to tour attendees at a location to be determined.

The cost of the tour is $10 for either the full tour or the abbreviated version.  For those attending the happy hour, any food and drinks will be on an individual purchase basis.

The length of the full tour is roughly 3 miles so please be prepared for this walk with proper footwear good on paved trail surfaces.  The tour will be conducted rain or shine.

One professional development hour (PDH) will be available to attendees upon successful completion of a quiz covering items discussed on the tour.

Please RSVP and pay for the tour at www.engrclub.org
