Greetings!
ASCESouth JerseyBranchwould like to invite you to our next technical meeting on Thursday, September 19, 2018; 5:30 P.M. at the Blue Monkey Tavern, in Merchantville.
Topic:
The Water-Energy Nexus: Evaluating the Sustainability of Waste-to-Energy Systems
Due to growing global populations and a dwindling supply of fossil fuels, the development of biofuels that are renewable and theoretically carbon-neutral has become increasingly attractive worldwide. However, as water and energy become tightly intertwined within our society, an intricate connection known as the Water-Energy Nexus, it is imperative that we seek technologies the produce renewable supplies of biofuel while mitigating impacts on our water supply. Typically, biofuels produced from food crops adversely impact the global food supply and consume substantial quantities of water. Therefore, increasing demand for biofuels could significantly exacerbate existing water quantity and quality difficulties. Biofuels produced from non-food feedstocks that offer lower water footprints need to be evaluated. In this presentation, the feasibility and sustainability of various Waste-to-Energy Systems in producing biofuel from organic waste feedstocks will be discussed while also evaluating the impacts of Waste-to-Energy Systems on the Water-Energy Nexus.
