Delaware Memorial Bridge: UHPC for Large Bridge Deck Rehabilitation
UHPC Solutions North America completed the nation’s largest Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) overlay installation on the Delaware Memorial Bridge in 2023, rehabilitating more than 550,000 square feet of deck surface across two miles and four lanes. This innovative solution offered superior durability, chloride resistance, and a 75-plus year service life, providing a cost-effective alternative to full deck replacement.
The unprecedented scale of the project required the development of new construction techniques, specialized equipment, and rigorous quality control procedures. This presentation will cover UHPC technology and provide a contractor’s perspective on project challenges, scope, construction methods, equipment, and execution. Attendees will gain insight into how UHPC overlays can be successfully applied to large, aging bridge structures while minimizing traffic disruptions.

Speaker bios:
John P. McFaddenis a Project Manager with UHPC Solutions North America, where he oversees estimating, project startup, execution, and closeout for major UHPC rehabilitation projects. With 25 years of experience in bridge and heavy highway construction management, he has led work on numerous UHPC overlays across the United States. He is a graduate of Pace University.

Peter J. Seibertis the Technical Expert for UHPC Solutions North America and has over 25 years of experience in cement, precast, ready-mix, and UHPC materials. He previously served as the North American Technical Director for a major UHPC supplier. He holds degrees in civil engineering from the University of Toronto and Queen’s University, and an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University. He is a licensed civil engineer in Ontario.
