March Webinar - 1 PDH
Comprehensive Evaluation of ASR Affected Components and Design of Rehabilitation for the Varina Enon Bridge
The Varina Enon Bridge carries I-295 across the James River around Richmond, VA and consists of a cable-stayed post-tensioned segmental concrete superstructure. The Virginia Department of Transportation has been carefully inspecting and monitoring the progression of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in the footings of the piers over the past decade and in 2023 initiated a project to remediate the degradation experienced by the ASR effects as well as protect the footings from any remaining future impacts. Parsons led the design of the rehabilitation effort and through the design process identified the need for site specific material testing information as well as an understanding of the remaining ASR potential and a quantification of deteriorated concrete for construction estimates. BDI was tasked with leading this material testing program together with its team of sub-consultants, as well as performing non-destructive evaluation. The collected information was used to finalize the design which will be under construction in the summer of 2026.
