March 24 - CE Evening Lecture

Join this lecture discussing scale up challenges with Tim Bell

Studies by the Rand Corporation in the 1980s identified substantial differences in the scale-up and start-up performance of plants processing particles versus those processing liquids or gases. The issues persist today.Particulate process plants take longer to start up and are less likely to achieve desired production rates. Facility owners and operators often underestimate the challenges involved. These problems often relate to an inadequate understanding of the behavior of particle systems. These behaviors are sensitive to process scale or process history in ways that would not be expected by engineers familiar only with liquid or gas systems. Empiricism must often substitute for first principles. Modeling provides some answers, but not enough to eliminate the need to operate pilot plants or large scale trials. This presentation reviews unit operations involved in particle processing and highlights scale-up issues involved. The use of information from suppliers and other third parties is discussed, as well as scale-up strategies.

Our speaker, Timothy A. Bell retired from DuPont in 2020 as a Senior Engineering Fellow. He led DuPont’s competency in solids handling and provided consulting and laboratory testing to DuPont’s business units, central R&D, and key customers. That work took the form of new process design, equipment selection, troubleshooting, and particle product development. Tim is an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware, teaching particle transport and senior design.Since retirement from DuPont, Tim has consulted with several companies on process design for new products and processes.
