Abstract:
In this active learning two-hour workshop, you'll stay busy by applying both philosophy of ethics and philosophy of law to evaluate and criticize the DE professional engineers' "Code of Ethics". Why in quotes? You'll analyze the code and decide for yourself whether it actually mandates ethical behavior, lawful behavior, or something else. Using ethical philosophy, you'll use a true ethical process to make a difficult engineering decision. Then you'll assess whether the code uses ethical processes. Using philosophy of law, you'll then assess whether the code is a proper system of laws. Finally you'll analyze work situations to determine whether an engineer's work in those situations is governed by the DE code.

 

Biography:

Richard Skeirik is neither philosopher nor lawyer, but holds degrees in biochemistry, chemical engineering and psychology. A 22 year veteran of DuPont Engineering, he worked in many aspects of chemical process engineering. Inventor of 17 AI process control patents, he worked for 10 years as litigation consultant and expert witness. He is also an expert in the psychology of personality disorders and author and publisher of 7 books in that field. He passed the PE exam in 2015 and is now a registered PE in Delaware. Richard currently prepares and teaches continuing education workshops for chemical engineers.
