Description:

In response to the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967, the U.S. Congress established the National Bridge Inspection Standards to set policy regarding bridge inspection for the safety of bridges in the United States. Subsequently, the NBIS has evolved into an essential part of DOT structures policy and the oversight of all highway bridges in the United States. This presentation will review the origins of the NBIS and some of the major events which have occurred in the past five decades that have shaped the current policy. It will also include case studies illustrating some of the unique challenges of bridge inspection. Finally, the presentation will look at some of the emerging changes that could shape the future of bridge inspection.
