Transformational Air Purification Technology and Paradigm Shift in Healthcare and Life Sciences

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a critical role in cell arrest, delay and mortality. Research has demonstrated that a large range of VOCs exist within biopharmaceutical processing facilities and cause cytotoxicity by perturbing cellular membranes, increasing intracellular calcium ions, impairing mitochondrial function, increasing DNA oxidative damage, increasing DNA fragmentation, and interfering with DNA and RNA replication processes. Case studies will be presented to show that VOCs and low levels of viable particulates, bacterial and viral, have detrimental effects on cell viability and growth.

Learning objectives:

1. Establish the criticality of air purification technology in improving cell growth and viability for successful cell culture processes.

2. Understand the factors involved in selecting effective air purification equipment for certain conditions or applications.

3. Review the detrimental effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and viable particulates using case studies.

4. Introduction to airborne metrics developed to drive VOCs and viable particulates to levels below detection.

5. COVID Specific: Discuss the most current data specific to the mechanisms, timing and common activities underlying our exposure to COVID-19 and similar viruses – airborne and surface transmission.
