The Metropolitan Transportation Authority/New York City Transit's (MTA/NYCT) 42nd Street Shuttle is a short but very busy connection in this corridor. As part of the overall improvement effort for this line, which is part of the City's original subway line opened in 1904, its western terminal at Times Square was studied to determine how its unusual layout and curved platforms could be modified and transformed to reduce confusion and congestion and add ADA accessibility. The station complex, the busiest on the system serving over 500,000 passengers daily, had to be able to remain open and serve riders during the work. The selected option was the most feasible and constructable and did not require street-level excavations in busy Times Square, and resulted in a new wide center platform, remvoal of columns along platform edges and a number of mezzanine-level columns to enhance passenger flow, and removed one track to create a more efficient two-track arrangement for the trains.
