The next two sessions of our 9-part series on Pipe & Culverts will take place this Wednesday, June 16th, and Wednesday June 30th (we will be skipping the week between).  These two courses are closely linked, so it is suggested that you attend both if possible.  Like usual, we will offer the recording of the first webinar for anyone who misses it.  This week’s webinar will discuss Pipe & Soil Fundamentals.  If you missed one of the previous sessions from this series, you can find links to the recorded webinars at the bottom of this email.  These videos may be streamed for PDH credit.

The rest of the series is listed below, with registration links.  Please feel free to share this with your colleagues or anyone looking for Professional Development Hours.  If registering for a NY PDH, please insert New York in the registration form even if you live out of state.

Pipe & Soil Fundamentals

Wednesday June 16, 2021 – 11am

When designing an underground structure, an engineer must consider the entire system created by combining the properties of both the soil envelope and the pipe itself. When the pipe has been properly installed these individual pieces work together to form the Soil‐Pipe system. How that system performs and behaves under load depends on the properties of the backfill and the pipe structure. Discussion will cover the following points:

Rigid pipe and flexible pipe react differently to loading

Compactive effort directly impacts the strength and durability of the installation, but consolidation continues for centuries

What happens to the soil‐pipe system when we add water?

Instructor

Trygve W. Hoff, Northeast Region Engineer, American Concrete Pipe Association

Location/Format

Pipe Installation | Wednesday June 30, 2021 – 11am

This presentation covers the best practices for pipe installation. These best practices include some new and some tried and true techniques from manufacturers, contractors, and designers. Share your favorites and see what others are doing.

Engineering Ethics | Wednesday July 7, 2021 – 11am

Engineering ethics is more than just a goal, it is the foundation of our profession. This course will explore past cases, hypothetical concepts, and the current canons of Ethics from two different engineering societies, covering: 1. History 2. Canons 3. Current Events 4. Application.

Box Culvert Installation | Wednesday July 14, 2021 – 11am

Precast box culverts provide an economic alternative to bridge replacement and large diameter pipe structures. Boxes provide the highest hydraulic capacity and can easily incorporate accelerated construction into your projects.

Post Installation Inspection | Wednesday July 21, 2021 – 11am

Once a drainage system has been installed, how do you know if it was installed correctly? The answer is a procedure known as Post Installation Inspection (PII). PII provides the owner the data needed to determine whether proper installation occurred prior to final acceptance.

Resilient Infrastructure | Wednesday July 28, 2021 – 11am

Buzzwords are often overused and underutilized, and Resilient Infrastructure frequently falls in that category. Yet in today’s constantly changing climate, engineers must consider the resiliency of their projects to withstand floods, fires, and earthquakes.

Trenchless Technology | Wednesday August 4, 2021 – 11am

A rapidly growing segment of pipe & box projects include trenchless technology. Jacking projects are less disruptive to traffic, communities, utilities and businesses. Trenchless installation saves time, money, and improves roadway safety.

Concrete Pipe Production - Recording

There are many processes used to produce high quality concrete pipe. New and improved machines and methods are continually being developed. This class focuses on the materials, techniques, and equipment used to consistently produce high‐quality precast products.

Accelerated Precast Construction - Recording

Like the FHWA Every Day Counts initiative, Accelerated Precast Construction (APC) is a concept intended to help Engineers and their clients achieve major infrastructure projects in a short period of time through the use of precast concrete drainage products.
