Description:
On May 11, 2021, Michael Baker International (MBI) discovered a critical fracture in the tie girder of the I-40 Hernando de Soto Bridge requiring immediate closure of the bridge for both vehicular traffic on and maritime traffic below the bridge. Michael Baker's design team worked expeditiously alongside the contractor, Kiewit Construction, to implement a three phased repair scheme to temporarily stabilize the structure, strengthen the fractured tie girder under post-tensioning, and address similar defects within the bridge as a result of non-destructive testing findings. The presentation will cover all three phases as well as the recently released findings of the forensic investigation of the fractured tie girder section
